Aside from being an udon noodle soup wizard, I… have not done anything productive today. … I feel like I should do something, but… I don’t know what. :C halp
Decided to make a handy graphic after seeing a lot of misinformation spread around tumblr. Current science isn’t perfect and definitions are bound to change, but I wanted to push back against the hostile attitude against it because it seems like a lot of people are being hostile for the wrong reasons.
Please let me know if there are any factual errors, thank you :)
Okay, I’m using this as a platform, because quite honestly I’m tired of this behavior and I need to vent about it for a minute. Nothing personal, OP, but your secret was the one to put the final hole in the dam, so here it goes:
If you need to insult something else in order to make your thing look good, then your thing is not worth defending in the first place.
Point blank, straight up, it isn’t. “MY FAVORITE GAME IS GREAT BECAUSE THIS OTHER GAME ISN’T” or “MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IS AWESOME AND THIS OTHER CHARACTER IS A STUPID BITCH” or “MY SHIP IS SO WONDERFUL UNLIKE THIS OTHER SHIP WHICH SUCKS” doesn’t make your game/character/ship look good by comparison. Rather, it makes it look worse because it implies that it can’t stand on its merits, that you don’t have enough good points to talk about when it comes to your favorite thing, that you have to bash another thing in order to make yours look better.
Truth be told, I like the humor in Graces! I actually think the humor was one of its strongest points. I could actually talk a bit about the many skits in Graces that made me actually laugh, especially in the Future arc when Richard joined. That said? I don’t need to diss another game, whether it’s Xillia, Symphonia, Vesperia, Abyss, or even escort titles like Dawn of the New World to do that. I don’t have to bring down another game in order to show why Graces’ humor is so great, because Graces’ humor can stand on its own.
But I see this all the time, that people do that, that someone will comment on why they really love something while trashing on something else in the process. Oftentimes I see it used as a defense. Someone will say, for example, “I don’t like Vesperia much,” and the rebuttal will be, “At least Vesperia was GOOD, unlike GRACES,” as if saying Graces is bad somehow makes Vesperia great. Or if someone says, “Lloyd wasn’t that great to me,” people will counter with, “At least he’s not a pissbaby like Emil!” And don’t even get me started on the ship wars. The Colloyd vs. Sheelloyd ship wars were some of the most violent I remember seeing in this fandom, and at the end of the day all it consisted of was one side bashing Colette to show Sheena as the “better choice” for Lloyd while the other ripped Sheena apart to make Colette “look better.”
The point is, I hate that. I hate that attitude, that mentality of, “I have to tear down this one thing to make my thing look good.” No. You don’t. If you like a thing, if you think a thing has merits, then talk about the merits of that thing, don’t drag another entirely unrelated thing into the mix in order to try and disparage it to make your thing look better. Because, do you know what? In this case specifically, while they are part of the same series of (mostly) unrelated games, Tales of Xillia and Tales of Graces are two very different games. They have a different art style, different story style, different game play style. And that isn’t to say that you can’t prefer one over the other, but it is to say that enjoying the humor in Graces has zip to do with the humor in Xillia, and that implying the humor in Xillia is lesser or worse by saying “only sexual jokes/innuendo” exist in it (which isn’t true) does not make Graces look better in comparison.
But really, it’s the attitude as a whole that gets me. That, “I like this thing, so I need to tear down this other thing to make it look better” attitude that gets me. If you’re in a conversation that’s already about which thing is better—such as, if you’re asked whether you prefer, say, Noishe or Repede—then by all means, go for it. But bringing up something completely unrelated to trash on it to make your preference look like a shining beacon of greatness is something I see all the time in this fandom, and to be honest I’m getting pretty sick of it.
Headcanon: Flower symbolism in blood elf society
The most interesting flower lore I found was from WoWWiki:
"The Worst Mage in Dalaran - A Children’s Book seems to imply that mageroyal grows where magical activity has recently occurred, though obviously in the game it spawns in preset nodes."
I think that this would lend mageroyals an alternate meaning of “prestige” since arcane magic is so important to blood elves.
I forgot “Golden Lotus: Luck” in the list.
…can I use this please? :)
This makes me so happy ;v;
Every now and then I need to remind myself of this. We all can be that other person.
I like making home-made noodle soups and stews. It makes me feel like some wizardy… alchemist!
Sorry it’s messy! It’s… way too late to start inking and I’m tiiiired and I can’t decide on the colours of the outfit. I might just go black and white with them. Can never go wrong with that ;v; (This is also why I don’t charge for sketches… soooo messy D: curse my essential tremor)
I like to think on those very, very rare occasions when Liadrin and Lor aren’t on duty, they go out to nice places together. Which one insists on the matching outfits is up for debate!
